Pregnancy Hygiene

Guides

Hormone changes during pregnancy can cause dry skin, and an increase in vaginal discharge. Poor hygiene can expose you to bacteria and microbes. These can cause infection which can be harmful to you and your baby.

We have outlined some important things to help you along your journey.

SKIN and HAIR

  • Ensure your skin is properly moisturized by applying lotions after shower
  • Use natural based products (shampoos, soaps)
  • Water temperature when you bath is essential. Too hot can make you dizzy
  • Bath daily
  • Avoid soaking in the bath tub. A shower is advised. You may also use a bucket

CLOTHING

  • Wear clothes that are lose and can be worn easily
  • Cotton under garments are recommended
  • Change sweaty clothes
  • Purchase high quality padded maternity bras. The pads help to absorb milk leaks from the nipples

ORAL

  • Good oral hygiene is essential. Take care of your teeth and gums. Brush twice daily and remember to floss to prevent buildup of plaque
  • Increase in estrogen levels during pregnancy can lead to sensitive (swelling) gums. Before using any medication or massaging with an anti-inflammatory agent, consult your doctor

PERSONAL HYGIENE

  • Do not douche during pregnancy unless your health provider gives you the green light
  • Clean yourself well after using the washroom. Using wet wipes containing lactic acid helps promote intimate hygiene.
  • Wash your hands before eating and dry them properly using a clean towel or kitchen paper.
  • Keep a hand sanitizer nearby
  • Keep pubic area clean and hair free
  • Use plain and natural soaps around your vagina so you do not change the natural PH balance.
  • Take care of your breasts. Ensure you change bra pads and clean your breasts. Damp breasts can get itchy.
  • Avoid vaginal deodorants

EXTRAS

  • Wear comfortable footwear
  • Never use the same towel as your partner
  • Avoid intimacy with a partner that has STI
  • Eating out should be done with caution. Ask about the ingredients and ensure food is prepared well in a hygienic environment
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking
  • Clean your nails to avoid dirt buildup
